Community Tech is led by James Lawrence, director and lead developer, based in Newbury. We build websites, small web apps and the awkward jobs in between, and senior associates join when a project needs a bigger team, from one pair of hands to fifteen plus.
From Enterprise to Community
James spent 30 years building software for telecoms, banks and public bodies before starting Community Tech, so small businesses and charities could get that same quality of work at prices they can actually pay.
Accessibility is a specialism. James taught IT to adults with learning disabilities before he built software for a living, and he has been the accessibility expert in every team he has worked in. We build for screen readers and keyboards as standard, audit existing sites against WCAG 2.2 AA, and built a SEND assessment platform for a children's SEND charity.
You deal with the person doing the work, not an account manager. If you already have an agency, we can sit behind them, white label, and we won't take the client.
Charity has always been a part of my life, and after a successful career as a professional web developer I am passionate about giving back to the sector and helping to make a difference through sharing my skills.
I lived at my grandparents' house for the first few years of my life and my aunty was severely autistic. I think I "volunteered" at my first charity when I was 4 or so, and my grandmother went on to receive an MBE for her services to charity. My mum became the CEO of a large local charity supporting people with learning disabilities and so it has been a constant thread in my life.
I currently volunteer for a handful of different organisations including a charity that supports children with SEND in the early years, a homeless/vulnerable adults supported living charity, and a national charity supporting older people. To be able to use my professional skills to contribute to the success of a range of charities is something that is really important to me at this point in my life, and I have a large network of some of the best professionals in the technology sector that can help to make this a reality.
